A dog owned by a Virginia family is being hailed a hero after coming to the rescue of a 9-year-old girl who was having a medical emergency. Spy, who is a trained diabetes service dog, alerted Shannon Boggs and her husband while they were watching television in their home in November. Just upstairs, their daughter, who has Type 1 diabetes, was sound asleep in her bed. And while she looked pretty normal to the eye, her blood sugar had spiked to a dangerously high level. The entire situation was filmed on camera by the mom.
When Shannon and her husband checked Raelynn's blood sugar, it was at a level of 338 mg/dL. A normal level for someone with diabetes at bedtime is between 90 and 150 mg/dL, according to the Joslin Diabetes Center at Beth Israel Lahey Health in Boston.
"The nose ALWAYS knows! Even when it's sleeping," Shannon captioned the video shared to Instagram. "This dog is such a blessing to our family! We truly can't be more thankful."

At the time of the video, Raelynn had the flu, which is known to cause high blood sugar. The 9-year-old, who wears a continuous glucose monitor, also had on a new monitor that was still calibrating, so her blood sugar measurements hadn't been checked. But all thanks to Spy, her parents were able to tend to her in time!
