Spoil Your Cats Rotten With This Adorable Two-Story Cat House

Cats love to sleep, and they can do it just about anywhere.

We've seen cats sleep under the bed, while perched precariously on the back of the couch, and in other uncomfortable-looking places — like this cat that decided to catch a few winks while sleeping on a watermelon!

Instructables user Balázs Srancsik was tired of finding his three cats all snoozing on the welcome mat in the entryway right next to his front door, so he decided to build them a house that would be much more comfortable.

At the start, it seemed like a pretty easy task. After all, a house for cats doesn't need to be that complicated: just a roof, some walls, and a soft place to lay down.

But as can happen with impromptu DIY projects, Balázs made a mistake — he failed to realize that making a house for three cats is different than making a house for just one.

Scroll through below to see how he quickly fixed the problem and created a palace that will be the envy of kitties everywhere!

Like many good DIY projects, this one was created as the solution to a very cute problem.

Balázs Srancsik's three cats absolutely love cuddling up together on the mat next to the front door.

They're adorable, but they were also in danger of being stepped on, so something had to be done.

Because cats always like to be different than dogs, Balázs decided to make an outdoor cat house in an octagonal shape, instead of a rectangle.

He created two "stop sign" shapes, and connected them using wood posts.

Next, he added walls made out of pine wainscot.

Balázs wrote: "Use small screws to fasten it on the frame, otherwise the frame might break!"

After the octagon was completely walled-in, he cut the entrance hole with a jigsaw, and softened the edges with a wood router so there wouldn't be any sharp pieces sticking out.

Then, Balázs added a carved sign that says "Cats," so everyone will know who lives there.

The next step was to create the roof joints and use a separate piece of wood in the center to hold them all together.

With the roof frame in place, it was finally starting to look like a kitty house!

It was then time to add the actual roof so the kitties would be safe from inclement weather.

To do this, Balázs cut triangle-shaped plywood and fit it together to form a slightly peaked roof, screwing it into the roof joints.

He probably could have stopped there, but he decided to add some adorable shingles!

Finally, it was time to kitty test the cat house.

He added a blanket and waited… The kitties immediately knew what they were supposed to do!

Unfortunately, Balázs noticed that it was awfully crowded in there when all three cats needed a nap.

The only thing to do was to add an extra floor!

To turn this single-story cat house into a double, Balázs simply repeated all of the steps to make another level.

This time, he drilled thin plywood panels to the internal parts of the frame, so that he could add insulation into the house's external wall.

He then stacked one level on top of the other.

The finished product? An adorable tower house that has plenty of room for all of the cats to sleep comfortably.
