Dogs infuse our lives with so much joy. They provide a sense of love and loyalty that’s hard to find elsewhere. In exchange, they require quite a lot from us as well. We provide our dogs with food, shelter, and affection. People with dogs have to constantly think of how their actions will affect their fur family. But for one family, their absence was unexpected. Sadly, the family dog was alone for “many weeks” while he waited for someone to come and check on his owners.

Sugarplum, a senior dog, spent weeks in the home with her dead owners before she was rescued. Once authorities found her, they took her to the Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, North Carolina.
The organization offered more details behind Sugarplum’s story in a Facebook post. “Our understanding is that there was a wellness check performed, and at that time, her human family was found deceased,” a spokesperson for Brother Wolf Animal Rescue told Cleveland 19 News. “Sugarplum had been in the house with them for many weeks.”

The shelter wrote about the confusion and fear she must have felt. “We can’t fathom the fear, panic, and confusion she must have felt for so long,” Brother Wolf Animal Rescue wrote. “Waiting for someone to remember her, to care about her. Today, her life took a new turn — a hopeful one.” It is unclear how Sugarplum’s family died.

After she was taken to the shelter, Sugarplum was transferred to a temporary foster family. She is awaiting adoption into a permanent home.
The shelter used Sugarplum’s story to discuss the need for its work. “Sugarplum’s arrival reminds us why our work is so important. She needs us,” the shelter noted in its Facebook post.

Brother Wolf Rescue takes in dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals from the area. In September 2024, Hurricane Helena devastated the shelter, as well as other parts of the southern US. Thankfully, staff managed to safely evacuate all the animals before the storm. The shelter is currently fundraising in an attempt to “rebuild and help the most vulnerable animals.”
