When there's so much pain, anger, and hatred in the world, it's nice to hear about people who take time to help others — or even assist our four-legged friends who may not be able to help themselves, like the teenager in Washington who carried a dying dog a mile and a half to safety.
People who dedicate their lives to animal rescue — like Beth Miner, a woman who runs a rescue for hoofed animals in Iowa — have a special calling to do a job that is too often very thankless.
Too many people dismiss animals as being "lower" than humans or "just objects" rather than living beings, so we need generous spirits like these who are willing to take the time to help. That's why we here at LittleThings like to bring attention to the incredible people who take time to to help out our furrier (or winged, or scaly) companions.

The firefighters rushed to the scene to discover this small dog trapped in a sinkhole. When they arrived, over 75 percent of his body was covered.
He had grown dehydrated and exhausted trying to free himself from the sinkhole. The more he struggled, the deeper he fell into the hole. By the time they had arrived, he was already starting to grow lethargic and was close to giving up.
The fire department grabbed a variety of tools, including shovels, to dig the dog out while ensuring that they didn't injure him.
After freeing him, they filled in the sinkhole to prevent any other animals from getting trapped in the same way.
The firefighters even went the extra mile, rushing the dog back to their fire truck so they could take him to the nearest animal hospital.
The animal hospital says that he is quickly recovering and should be back to normal in no time. Fortunately, this lucky dog already has an owner, who is incredibly grateful to the fire department — and the dog is, too!
