Indianapolis resident Jessica Arnold has been taking care and feeding a neighborhood stray she calls Jimma. But, last Friday, the 20-year-old came home and found the pit bull mix with her head stuck in the rim of a car tire.
In turn, Arnold took Jimma to the Indianapolis Fire Department asking for help to save the hopeless pooch.
Like the Oakland firefighters who saved a dog from a fire and the ones who rescued a kitten in Florida, the neighborhood firehouse stepped in for Jimma. It shared the incredible rescue in a series of photos on its Facebook page.
While liquid soap and oil didn’t help to remove the dog’s head, the firefighters decided that extrication tools would be the best way. Making sure not to injure the dog, they removed the outer rubber layer first and then focused on rim. It took over an hour to get Jimma's head out.
“Several times throughout the process, the dog turned skittish and firefighters had to allow the dog a minute to calm down before continuing,” the caption reads. “Using a tool that cuts brake pedals on cars, firefighters were able to make several substantial cuts in the rim that then allowed them to use the spreaders to further open the rim.”
Now, Arnold also plans to give Jimma a forever home.
“Thank you Jessica for allowing us to help Jimma in her time of need. We were happy to do so and are thankful our efforts were successful,” the firehouse continued.

Indianapolis resident Jessica Arnold Jimma found an 18-month-old neighborhood stray with her head stuck in the rim of a tire.

Desperate for help, Arnold asked firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department to help save the pit bull mix.

Several of them quickly came together to help save the pooch using extrication tools.

The firefighters were gentle and refrained from using any equipment that could potentially harm the dog. In the meantime, members of the IEMS Medic 5 helped calm Jimma by petting her.

Eventually Jimma was saved and appeared "very happy." The best part: She went home with Arnold, who will soon become her permanent family!
