That wasn't Brad Pitt cruising from JFK Airport in a white stretch limousine with a sunroof and tinted windows. It was actually an eight-year-old beagle named Jasper, who officially retired from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) after six years of service protecting the country.
The rescue dog-turned-four-legged hero had spent most of his days sniffing through the baggage claim at JFK, trying to find fruits, vegetables, meats, plants, animals, and other contraband that passengers may smuggle into the U.S.
On an average day, JFK Airport receives roughly 250 international flights, so Jasper — along with K-9 Specialist handler Amanda Tripple — comb through thousands of pieces of luggage to safeguard America against various forms of agroterrorism.
"When I ask him to work, he puts 100 percent in. I couldn't ask for a better partner," Tripple said.
After years of dedicated service and intercepting 23,485 prohibited plant and animal products, Jasper made one final discovery before heading to his forever home with Tripple, who officially adopted him.
On October 5, the beagle got the send off of the century from Purina Dog Chow and LittleThings as a thank you for his service in protecting the country. After saying goodbye to his co-workers, he was sent off in a limo packed full of gifts and treats. Additionally, Purina Dog Chow donated a year's supply of dog food.
