In St. Albans, West Virginia, a daring rescue took place on August 10, 2015. Cries were heard by residents, cries that seemed to be coming from an underground drainpipe. It was soon discovered that the screams belonged to an abandoned kitten.
After firefighters and volunteers arrived on the scene, they learned that, in fact, three kittens had been trapped by rising waters due to rainstorms in the area.
Sadly, after one was saved by its mom, another drowned.
But the third kitten was still trapped inside the pipe, screaming for someone to help.
That someone would end up being Dorella Tuckwiller, the president and founder of the animal rescue group Itty Bitty Kitty Committee.
She took it upon herself to crawl headfirst into the drainpipe and seek out the kitten.
Eventually, Tuckwiller screamed "Get me out!" Once volunteer firefighter Galeena Wileman pulled her free, she handed the barely breathing kitten to another volunteer.
The crowd cheered around her.
"My biggest fear was I was going to lose him,” Tuckwiller said. “If I had dropped him… that was my biggest fear was not being able to hold him above the water and dropping him."
In the video below, you will see the moving moment Tuckwiller freed the poor kitten, and their heartwarming encounter together.
The weeks-old kitten was taken to the vet for a full recovery, at which point it will then be put up for adoption.
