Puppy Won’t Stop Coughing, So Owner Rushes Her To Vet. When She Sees X-Ray, She’s Blown Away

Every dog owner worries about their pet's health — they might eat something bad, choke on a toy, run outside and get lost, and so on. A dog owner's worries go on and on, especially with a new dog.

When you have a puppy, you know that they're prone to chewing on things and eating things they shouldn't (like human toddlers do), so you try to watch to make sure they're not choking on anything they put in their mouths.

But like babies, it's impossible to watch them every minute of every day, so they often get into things they shouldn't. One woman in Glasgow, Irene Paisley, had just adopted a 12-week-old Staffordshire bull terrier after her previous dog died, when she noticed the puppy, Macie, acting strangely.

"Macie was making a squeaking sound — I thought she’d swallowed part of a toy," Irene explained to Daily Mail. "Then she was sick, but there was no sign of a toy, and she started choking.

“I was terrified. Poor Macie was still choking and, by the time we arrived at the vet’s, there was blood coming out of her nose. The loss of our previous dog was still very raw and the thought of losing Macie was devastating.”

When the vet did an X-ray, they found something astonishing: an eight-inch knife in Macie’s stomach. Both Irene and the vet were shocked. Irene thinks Macie must have snagged the knife from the open dishwasher, but she never thought her little pup could eat something so huge without anyone noticing. They rushed her into emergency surgery immediately after her X-ray.

“I’ve never seen an X-ray like Macie’s. She was extremely lucky to survive,” the vet said. “Her saving grace was that she swallowed the handle-end first — the blade end would undoubtedly have pierced her organs, likely causing fatal injuries.

“The morning after surgery, she was bouncing all over the place as if nothing had happened. Macie has been back for frequent check-ups over the past two weeks and we’re pleased she’s recovering and healing well.”
