Neighbors Kidnap Abused Dog After Seeing Her Photo — But Was It The Right Thing To Do?

One reason many people witness but don't report abuse is for fear of being wrong. A false claim to police can ruin a person's life, but what happens when regular citizens take the law into their own hands?

That is exactly what four neighbors and strangers to a Tacoma, WA dog did when they feared she was being mistreated. The good Samaritans snatched Kiki out of her own backyard and brought her to a veterinarian for help.

Autumn Niesz-Ramos admitted to taking the dog in a conversation with Q13FOX: “The dog was clearly starving and in really bad shape so we got a group of us and go over there,” Niesz-Ramos said. “The dog could barely stand up she was so weak … She was shaking, she was so cold.”

However, the dog is no longer with Animal Control or The Humane Society. She has likely been picked up by Steven Lee, Jr., who says Kiki belongs to his father and admitted to Q13FOX that “She wasn’t in good shape."

The problem is that Animal Control says they can't hold Kiki without proof of abuse or a warrant, but Niesz-Ramos believes they did the right thing.

“I don’t think I stole her, I think I saved her,” she said. The investigation is still ongoing, but this sad case poses a big question…
