Police dogs are invaluable members of police forces all over the world. These dogs are able to sniff out drugs, chase down felons, and act alongside their human counterparts to fight crime.
Typically, police dogs, like these cutie pies graduating from school, start training at a very young age. The hero of our story, a German shepherd named Gavel, began his police dog training at only 10 weeks old.
Like any other puppy, Gavel loved belly rubs and head scratches, and he loved playing with new friends on the police force in Brisbane, Australia.
His police trainers knew Gavel was a friendly pup, but they expected him to become a bit tougher as he began his police training.
Gaven did well in his lessons, but his trainers quickly realized that he wasn't growing out of his friendliness.
Instead of doing his duty to catch criminals and sniff out illegal substances, Gavel kept approaching strangers for playtime and snuggles.
Gavel's police trainers realized that the pup wouldn't be able to continue being a police dog, so they fired him from the force. But now Gavel has a brand-new job that's perfect for his personality.

Meet Gavel, a German shepherd puppy who began life with dreams of becoming a police dog in the Queensland Police Service in Brisbane, Australia.
However, Gavel's trainers on the force quickly realized that a police career maybe wasn't for him.
The sweet puppy was just too friendly. He couldn't stop playing with strangers — the same strangers he was probably supposed to be watching suspiciously.
When Gavel started training as a 10-week-old puppy, his trainers assumed he'd grow out of his friendliness.
Police dog training involves learning how to act when lives are on the line. German shepherds like Gavel are typically well-suited to the task because they are extremely intelligent and courageous, according to the American Kennel Club.
However, it quickly emerged that, though brave and smart, Gavel just wasn't cut out for that lifestyle. He loves people too much!
When Gavel started his training at 10 weeks, he moved into the Queensland governor's official residence, which is where he lived throughout his police training.
When he was relieved of his police puppy duties, the governor, Paul de Jersey, stepped in.
The governor knew the friendly pup well and decided to make Gavel part of the family.
Governor De Jersey moved Gavel in full time, and gave the pooch a lofty new title: Vice-Regal Dog.
While other members of his original police training class will go to work fighting crime, Gavel will serve the public in a different way.
His new title makes him essentially a canine ambassador for the governor!
In his new role, Gavel has a whole bunch of exciting responsibilities.
The governor's office posted a photo of Gavel's contract to Instagram, explaining his new position.
They wrote: "It's official! Gavel's duties include welcoming guests and tour groups to Fernberg [the government house], and having an official presence on certain ceremonial occasions."
Governor De Jersey's official Facebook page has also been keeping people in the loop, writing:

Gavel may have assumed a fancy new position in the Australian government, but don't be fooled: this pooch still knows how to have a good time.
Governor De Jersey's official social media pages have been sure to note that Gavel, while a good and noble hound, is also a complete goofball.
He may be all grown-up now, but this is clearly still the cutie-pie puppy that was too affectionate for police work.
Although he wasn't successful as a police dog trainee, Gavel will definitely be a great ambassador for the governor, and for all of Australia.
