Fun Facts For Even The Most Die-Hard Pug Enthusiasts

Our regular readers needn't a reminder that we at LittleThings have a special affinity for pugs. Our office pug, Smokey, was featured in a recent post for Take Your Dog to Work Day, and there's no denying these pups are an American favorite.

"They look like little cartoons," says Andrea Arden, a dog trainer. And they do! They have big, bulging eyes swathed in wrinkled faces, and their curiosity makes them all the more animated. And, as Animal Planet points out, these little beasts have become quite the favored pet breeds. But how much do we know about these short-snouted babies? Dogs 101 brings us some little known facts about these four-legged cuties.

For instance, did you know that that whole heavy breathing thing for which pugs are famous isn't a characteristic unique to their breed? They fall in a group of dog breeds called brachycephalic dogs, which also include boxers, chow chows, bullmastifs, and a long list of others. These dogs have flatter faces and elongated pallets, says Animal Planet, which causes their breathing issues. Celebrity pet stylist Jonathan David points out that things like warmer weather can be a contributing factor, but that doesn't keep these huffin' hounds from looking any less adorable. Listen to these and other pug facts below.
