For his 28th birthday, U.S. Army soldier Dapo Oremade wanted to do something extra special. Instead of requesting gifts for himself, he's hoping to raise money for others in need.
The University of North Texas graduate co-founded a startup called NachoBirthday — a site where users raise funds in honor of the celebration of life for charity and community projects instead of asking for gifts for your birthday. For his upcoming day, he is helping one of his students get a service dog.
While studying at UNT, Dapo began to tutor now 20-year-old Jessica McClure. Jessica was born with cerebral palsy and dystonia, a neurological disorder in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures. As he taught her biology and chemistry, she taught him a few life-changing lessons about the power of faith and perseverance.
Jessica has had two brain surgeries to help with her symptoms, and is awaiting her third.
For Dapo's birthday, he wanted to help Jessica get a service dog, which will cost around $20,000! Jessica has also promised to name her dog after whoever gives her the highest donation (with permission of course).
In the video below, Dapo asks for support and hopes to raise awareness about his cause.
"She actually plans on going to college for public health and a service dog will go a long way. It will cost nothing less than $20,000 to acquire one, and this where you guys come in. I need your help to make a difference this year. To my family, friends, and people with good hearts out there, I am reaching out to you to give your support in acquiring this dog," Dapo said.
