Vultures have gotten a pretty bad reputation over the years.
I blame movies and television. In cartoons, a vulture flying overhead has always been a sign that one of the characters is about to meet their end. There always seems to be one vulture following the main character to show they are in mortal peril.
Because grown vultures tend to represent death, people forget that they're also very cute when they are born just like other baby birds. They are actually pretty dang adorable!
Agnes hatched at the St. Louis Zoo on April 3, 2016, and she is the zoo's first vulture to hatch since 1991! Can you believe they haven't had a baby vulture at the zoo in 25 years?
She was only 4.4 ounces when she was born and so pink and tiny. Agnes' mother happens to be the oldest vulture in history to hatch an egg, at about 45 years old.
My knowledge of vultures is very limited, but did you have any idea how they are raised when they're not born in the wild? You can see Agnes interact with her handlers in the video below!
If you enjoy this little baby girl, you will also enjoy this video of baby birds actually hatching from their eggs. They have no feathers when they are born!
Don't forget to SHARE this new addition to the St. Louis Zoo with all your friends and family!
