In April of 2013, 17 rescued puppy mill dogs were transported to their rescue haven in New York. The dogs ranged in age from 6 months old to six years old, and they were all in various states of shock, fear, and joy to be free. Yorkies, Bichons, Poodle mixes, Beagles and other mutts — some pregnant, all filthy and starving — were part of this "Destination Freedom" led by Doghouse Adoptions.
The organization says, "Eyes now forward without looking back, every one of these dogs appreciates a gentle hand, a soft voice and general human kindness, but a sense of freedom doesn’t come at once. After a lifetime of walking on chicken wire cages, the small dogs often raise one foot and then the other, even on solid ground – an ingrained coping mechanism of relief for what has been long-term discomfort. Phantom behaviors should subside over time, but the dogs’ hearts will surely overcome as kindness leads them to favor freedom over fear."
Seeing these dogs able to romp and play in the sunlight, run around with their friends and enjoy the genuine care of humans is nothing short of amazing.
