Yes, Cats Can Really Learn These 3 Tricks, Especially If You Start When They’re Young

We all know that it's not too hard to teach dogs a few new tricks, but what about cats? While our feline friends have a certain reputation that precedes them, there are plenty of friendly, inquisitive kittens and cats out there who can definitely be taught a new trick (or even five).

One of the best things about teaching your cat a few tricks is that it's so unexpected when they pull them off. After all, anyone who has spent an afternoon cruising TikTok for videos of cats doing tricks probably knows just how delightful the experience of seeing a cat pull off a surprise trick can be.

Here are three tricks you can (probably) teach your cat, especially if you start young.

Teach a Cat To Sit

The site Fear Free Happy Homes says that not only is it possible to teach your cat to sit, it's not even that hard!

Here's what the site suggests:

  1. Sit on the floor near your cat while holding a treat.
  2. If your cat walks over to check out the treat, hold it over their head and say "sit."
  3. When they sit down, give them the treat and tell them how good they are!

The site also suggests using a clicker to help your cat learn faster.

Teach Your Cat To Fetch

Cats actually have a good time playing fetch! Petplan offers great tips for teaching this trick to your cat:

  1. Open up a can of tuna and rub some of the water from the can onto your cat's favorite toy.
  2. Throw the toy out of your cat's reach.
  3. If your cat picks up the toy, reward your cat with a treat or sound.
  4. Do the same if your cat brings the toy back to you.

Teach Your Cat To High Five You

Pet Plan also says it's completely possible to teach your cat to high five!

  1. Call your cat to you while holding a treat.
  2. Encourage your cat to reach up for the treat with their paw.
  3. If that's not working, hold the treat near their nose so they'll reach for it.
  4. Reward them when they reach up.
