Dachshunds, or "wiener dogs," are not the obvious choice for a guard dog. My aunt and uncle had two wiener dogs, and the way they'd show "protection" was by hiding behind their owners' legs and yapping.
Ollie the dachshund of Bensalem, PA, however, recently went missing after he bravely tried to protect and defend his family.
His owners, Evan Greenhouse and Nicole Donlen, heard Ollie on the second floor of their townhouse barking more than usual. They went upstairs, only to find a complete stranger on their balcony participating in lewd behavior. The man fell through the glass into their house and Ollie — along with their other dog, Heinz — leapt up to defend their owners by attacking the man. The man grabbed Ollie and jumped off the balcony.
It was a shocking experience for everyone, but especially devastating for Evan and Nicole when they realized they were missing the dog who so desperately wanted to protect them. The events that followed are just as astonishing.

Nicole, pictured here, and her fiancé were mortified when they found a man on their upstairs balcony exposing himself. They tried to remain calm as they called the police, but soon the man entered their house and the dogs took action.

Ollie and Heinz, their pet dachshunds, jumped up on the man to attack him in the hopes of protecting their owners.

Nicole told the Philadelphia Inquirer, "We've trained our dogs to protect against intruders and they did exactly that. They're our heroes in all this."

The man was 21-year-old casino employee Angel Suarez Medero. Medero grabbed Ollie and jumped from the second floor balcony to the ground below. He was later caught when he broke into another home and was shot by its owner. Medero has been arrested and is awaiting trial on numerous accusations.
As Medero fled, Ollie, still trying to protect his family, pursued the criminal and also went over the balcony. Ollie took off running once he landed, though his owners were not sure where.

In all the chaos, Ollie got lost. The family put out ads in hope of finding him, and some locals even called to report sightings. Local animal rescue services and the police department even began setting humane traps to try to reunite the hero with his family.
The Dachshund Rescue of Bucks County and New Jersey set up infrared cameras around the county and were able to finally locate Ollie a few weeks later.

The courageous canine had injured his hind leg in the jump, but was otherwise doing well. The rescue organization reunited him with his owners, who cried the moment they saw him.

Ollie is back with his family and is recovering from his surgery. Funds have been raised to pay for these expenses, and anything leftover will be donated to local shelters.

After a terrifying several weeks on his own, he is now back with a family that loves him. Ollie is a true hero.
