On the surface, Peanut lives a pretty ordinary life. But she's actually the world's oldest chicken. Peanut is 21 years old and was raised by a woman named Marsi. In a Good Morning America video, Marsi documents Peanut's daily life.
The average lifespan of a chicken varies. According to the Humane League, chickens might live three to seven years in the wild (and sometimes longer), and backyard chickens can live even longer with good care. Although Peanut is quite old for a chicken, she appears to be enjoying her life in Michigan.
On an average day, Peanut might spend time outside with her boyfriend, Benny, or play indoors with her cat friends. In spite of her old age (and the fact that she is a chicken), Peanut recognizes her name.
Peanut's old age is even more impressive considering how her life started. In 2002, Peanut was abandoned by her mom (while she was still inside her egg). What appeared to be an unhatched egg actually had Peanut living inside of it, Marsi noticed when she went to take care of the egg, according to The Detroit News. She peeled Peanut out of the egg, but Peanut's mom still wanted nothing to do with her. Peanut spent the early years of her life as a house chicken because the other chickens weren't very nice to her.

Peanut lives with other animals on a no-kill farm in Michigan. But she still spends a lot of her time in the living room and sitting in Marsi's lap, The Washington Post reported. “Peanut is a sassy little chicken — if she doesn’t get her blueberry yogurt in the morning, I definitely hear about it,” Marsi told The Washington Post.
