It's office: 2018's World's Ugliest Dog has been crowned, and she appears to be about 90% slobber. Zsa Zsa, an English rescue bulldog, won first place at the 30th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, California. Zsa Zsa's owners couldn't be more proud.
"Nine years young with a swaggering tongue, Zsa Zsa delivered a shower of slobber as she claimed this year's title," read the competition's news release.
The competition wasn't easy. Yes, Zsa Zsa's tongue hangs all the way down to her chest. Yes, she's got an underbite that could make the toughest dentists cry. But there were lots of other ugly dogs to compete against, from scruffy gremlins to hairless pups.
To prepare for the competition, Zsa Zsa had her nails painted pink. As for that tongue, the Brainards make sure to keep it moist and use doggie Chapstick on Zsa Zsa's lips.
As winners of the competition, the Brainards won $1,500, a trophy, and a flight to New York to appear on the Today Show.
For the record, we think that Zsa Zsa — and every Very Good Boy and Girl — are beautiful just the way they are.

This is a big moment for Zsa Zsa, who "was a puppy mill dog for five years in Missouri," dog parents Megan and Jesse Brainard said. She later ended up at Underdog Rescue in Minnesota, where the Brainards fell in love with her unique face.

"From the moment we saw her beautiful face, we knew we would be her forever home. We are so excited for her, she deserves this."

Zsa Zsa will likely celebrate with her favorite snacks: Chipotle and Slim Jims.
She's the latest winner in a long tradition of ugly dogs. The World's Ugliest Dog Contest has been taking places for 30 years at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California.

Contest judges examine each dog, and there's also a People's Choice Award. The contest "speaks to the importance of advocating for the adoration of all animals and the benefits of adopting."
In other words: ugly dogs need homes too!

Last year's winner, Martha, was a Neapolitan Mastiff with an incredibly droopy face.

This year, little Scamp, who naturally grows dreadlocks, finished second-place.

And scruffy Josie – a Chinese crested mix with a miniature version of Zsa Zsa's protruding tongue – nabbed third runner-up.
But the competition also features tons of adorably ugly dogs that don't win titles.

Like Charlie here, whose family nicknamed him "Zombie Dog."

And Rascal Deux, a naturally hairless chihuahua who rocks a hotdog leash everywhere he goes.

Another contestant, Himisaboo, is half-Chinese crested (hence the hairlessness), half-wiener dog.
Chinese crested dogs are especially popular in ugly dog competitions – the weird hair is definitely both ugly and endearing. Last year's winner, SweePee Rambo, was a Chinese crested chihuahua.
But dogs can be "ugly" in all kinds of ways.

Just take Quasi Modo, the 2015 World's Ugliest Dog, as an example! She's a mutt with a birth defect that gives her the appearance of having a hunchback.

Or Pabst, the 2009 World's Ugliest Dog. Pabst is a boxer mix, and he won the title over tons of Chinese crested dogs competing to win.
The contest is more than just a show. Ugly dog competitors serve as ambassadors to raise money for animal shelters and advocate for adoption.

Each year, competition seems to get stiffer and stiffer.
"It was a very difficult decision, we loved all of the dogs," NBC News correspondent and contest judge, Jo Ling Kent, said of this year's contest.

"It was a huge responsibility and we are just so happy for Zsa Zsa.”
