After Sara Connell and her husband Bill suffered heartbreaking infertility struggles, the couple decided to look for a surrogate. The family took an unconventional journey, however, when Connell's 61-year-old mother offered to carry her child.
Kristine Casey, from Chicago, had no real reservations about carrying her daughter's child, claiming the happiest moments of her life were being pregnant and having three girls. After she heard about another older women successfully becoming a surrogate for her infertile daughter, Casey was open to the idea. In an instant, the mother and daughter were brought even closer together with this life-changing decision.
After a series of tests and recommendations from doctors, the family decided to go ahead with the surrogacy, letting Casey be a gestational carrier for her daughter.
After nine months, Connell and her mother held hands as Finnean Lee Connell was successfully delivered by cesarean section. When the baby let out a cry, "I lost it," Connell, the first family member to hold him, told the Chicago Tribune. "It's such a miracle."
While successful childbirth for post-menopausal women is rare, numbers have been rising due to advances in IVF treatments.
The family's story has been told in Connell's new memoir, Bringing in Finn: An Extraordinary Surrogacy Story. Casey is an extraordinary woman, who did an unquestionably loving and generous thing for her daughter.
