No matter the circumstances behind their various situations, many adopted children often grow up with a huge question mark in the back of their minds when it comes to their lineage.
While most of us can easily trace our family's background by simply asking our parents, the laws and policies in some states and countries can make it feel impossible for those individuals to truly know who they are.
That's not to say they aren't given a great life with the parents who adopt them, of course, but it is understandably frustrating to have such a huge chunk of your life left in the dark.
Kristina Musil was experiencing that anguish as she fruitlessly attempted to uncover her roots. The laws in Cincinnati, OH, meant her birth certificate remained locked away — that is, until Adoption Network Cleveland campaigned to open those records for 400,000 adoptees across the state.
Musil soon learned her birth mother, Kathy, had been forced to give her away due to her strict Catholic father's admonishments. However, knowing her mom fought so hard to keep her meant the world to Musil, who has since forgiven her grandfather and reunited with the family she was stripped from 40 years ago.
Flying 4,000 miles from her home in Vienna, Austria, everyone was stunned by how uncannily she resembled her mom. Unfortunately, Kathy died five years prior, but her siblings made sure to let Musil know just how much she loved her baby girl.
