Stephanie Stonis started to feel contractions early one morning, so she sent her daughters off to school and told her husband, Mark, it was time to head to the hospital. Soon after, Stephanie went into labor.
The couple started their 30-minute drive from their Virginia Beach home. When they got in the car, however, Stephanie said she didn't think they'd have enough time to make it to the hospital — and she was right. Her water broke. She needed to push. She told Mark to pull over.
The now-panicked husband was obviously hesitant to pull over, but he knew he needed to step up for the sake of his family. And so, before first responders arrived at the scene, Paul Mark Anthony Stonis was born on the side of the road inside his parents' car along a Chesapeake stretch of Interstate 64.
Mark Stonis was on the phone with 911 when he delivered his son. He even used his shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord.
This isn't the first time we've seen a baby delivered before the parents could make it to the safety of a hospital. One mother was forced to have her baby during a high-speed drive, and the result was like something out of an action movie!
