There are certain animals out there that you shouldn’t give all the snuggles to, no matter how tempting it is. I know I’ve always wanted to snuggle lions! They look so fluffy and cuddly, especially the babies, but we all know how that would end. However, if you’ve ever had the temptation to snuggle a bear, now might be your chance!
Inside Edition shared a video about a job that’s available at the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish: a bear hugger. Yes, this is an actual job. The department is on the lookout for a new conservation officer who is a true animal lover to join their team.
Current conservation officer Ariel Perraglio explained that you would essentially be holding the bear cubs and keeping them warm while they are getting their measurements and everything else during their checkups.
Sgt. Benjamin Otero said, “We were holding them so tightly because they get cold very easily when they’re not with their mothers, so you have to wrap them in blankets and keep them close to your body so that they can stay warm.”
Of course, there is more to the job than hugging bears. That’s the easy part! Sgt. Otero gave a description of what they expect of their new hire. He said, “A conservation officer is someone who is in the practice of management for fish and wildlife conservation and also does law enforcement. Kind of protecting New Mexico’s wildlife along with enforcing laws and regulations throughout New Mexico for hunting and fishing and tracking in particular.”

Even though this job sounds like a lot of work, being able to be up close and personal with wildlife is a plus. Joining the team allows you to work with many types of wildlife. Elk, bears, and antelope are only a few examples of the types of animals you can expect to get up close and personal with.
All animal and wildlife lovers are encouraged to apply. I know if I lived in New Mexico, I would at least attempt to put in an application, just so I could cuddle some baby bears!
