Young Elephant Gets Separated From Its Mother And Is Suddenly Attacked By 14 Lions

The circle of life is never a pretty thing. It’s hard seeing other animals get hurt, but unfortunately, if they’re low on the food chain, they have a more difficult time surviving in the world. There are times, though, when the prey beats the predator.

The New York Post posted a video about a young elephant who somehow survives an attack by 14 lions. Elephants are my favorite animal, so this video was not easy for me to watch! It did help to know that it ends in a positive way.

The baby elephant, only a year old, strayed from his mother, causing him to get caught up with some vicious lions. This unfortunate incident occurred at the Norman Carr Safaris Chinzombo Camp in Zambia.

The video of the incident was captured on video when journalist Jesse Nash, Long Island University art professor Dan Christoffel, naturalist Steve Baker, and Australian TV personality Nina Karnikowski went on a game drive through the safari. The moment they caught on video is a rare sight to see.

When the video starts, you see a female lion on the back of the baby elephant as all the other lions are surrounding him. As the baby struggles to get the lion off his back, he starts to run toward the river. As he gets closer to the river, the female lion is all the way on his back, almost looking as if she is riding him. Then another lion grabs onto the back of the elephant, trying to get him down.

Still not giving up hope, the elephant heads into the water to try to get rid of some of his predators. Some of the lions back off, but the lion riding the elephant bareback seems determined not to lose.

The lion on his back eventually jumps off, and that gives the elephant some confidence. He starts to chase them down, and all the lions start to run from him. But every time he tries to walk away, the lions go after him again. Once he turns around, though, and asserts his dominance, the lions decide to not pursue him as prey anymore. Toward the end of the video, it almost looks like the baby elephant is having fun chasing off his predators! I always enjoy a happy ending.
