This video takes us back to the story of Beth Thomas, who was interviewed by Dr Ken Magid, a clinical psychologist specializing in abused children, after she exhibited many dangerous behaviors, including attempting to kill her younger brother.
The 1992 CBS documentary titled Child of Rage are shown throughout this look back with a young Beth, who was only 6 years old at the time, telling her therapist that she wanted to stab her parents in the dark of night, so they wouldn’t see her commit the murderous act.
Beth and her younger brother, Jonathan, were adopted by Tim and Julie Tennent, after losing her mother and enduring unimaginable sexual abuse by her biological father throughout the first few years of her life.
Beth was diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder, a condition which can come to light when children fail to establish healthy bonds with their parents or caregivers due to extreme abuse.
The documentary showcases Beth’s accounts of the neglect and sexual abuse, or the “nightmares” she describes at the hands of her biological father. All of this had manifested itself in uncontrollable bouts of anger.
She also had extreme difficulty developing a sense of conscience as well as trust and love in others due to her years of abuse. This even resulted in Beth’s abuse of her younger brother, Jonathan, as well as their family pets.
Six-year-old Beth also recounts how she stole some knives from the kitchen and hid them away in hopes of stabbing her adoptive parents.
