In the mid-1950s, audiences around the world were introduced to a beguiling new form of music known as rock 'n' roll. Old standards sung by crooners like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby quickly became out of style as young men and women clamored for the more raucous genre we still enjoy today. While talking about that era, your first thought is likely drawn to Elvis Presley and his famous swinging hips. However, he wasn't the first teddy boy to break out of the mold with a driving beat.
Bill Haley and His Comets had that honor when their previously unsuccessful "Rock Around the Clock" was featured in the 1955 hit film, Blackboard Jungle. Though Presley would later be dubbed "the King," Haley was instantly considered the "Father of Rock and Roll" as the tune climbed its way up the charts. Two years later, he would become the first rocker to journey across the pond for a European tour.
Starting things off in Germany, Haley was shocked by the chaotic greeting waiting for him from his young fans. Funnily enough, Presley also happened to be in the area while stationed with his Army troop, but something tells me those soldiers had a much less erratic reaction to seeing an idol in their midst. Not only does the crowd passionately cheer throughout Haley's set, but they try to crawl their way onto the stage to be closer to him and his signature kiss-curl hair.
Take a look below to see when things get even crazier once he's finished his set. This makes Beatlemania look like a walk in the park!
