One of my favorite things to do is to look at old photographs I've taken.
I keep them in photo albums and in picture frames around the house. Looking at a picture of some fun memory is a surefire way to put a smile on my face. So naturally I keep picture frames all over my home.
When I saw this easy and creative DIY project to make the perfect rustic-looking picture frame, I knew I had to try it.
On her blog It's Always Autumn, Autumn takes us through the super simple steps for transforming a normal hardcover book into a cool picture frame. And with a book cover for a frame, my photos will look perfect on any bookshelf.
All you'll need are:
- Hardcover book
- Photograph
- Pen
- X-Acto knife
- Plastic page protector
- Tape

Autumn was looking for creative projects to do with her large collection of books. She grabbed a hardcover book, photograph, pen, X-Acto knife, plastic page protector, and tape.
Autumn traced the outline of her photograph onto the inside of the front cover. She used a 4x6 inch photo and a 6x8-inch book, but for a bigger picture she could have substituted a bigger book.
She then used her knife to cut 1/8 of an inch inside the line she had drawn. She was careful not to try to push the knife all the way through on the first cut. She took her time making five or six slices along each side.
Autumn was then able to complete the cuts from the opposite side and pop the rectangular piece out.
Already the hard part was finished and the frame was taking shape. She left frayed edges around the inside of the frame to add to its rustic quality!
Autumn lined up the sheet protector with the bottom corner of the pencil rectangle from earlier and cut the protector by slicing just outside the original lines.
Her sheet protector now formed a perfect holder for her picture!
Autumn lined up the photo protector on the inside of the cover and taped it down on three sides, forming the perfect pocket to remove and replace the photograph!
The whole process took her less than 15 minutes! And with the protective cover, her photograph won't get ruined by dust or fingerprints.
And the best part? Autumn already had all of the supplies in her house so it didn't cost any money at all! Now, Autumn has the perfect rustic-looking, homemade photo frame!
