Rachel Lewis was a bright and motivated 19-year-old Australian student who had dreams of becoming a veterinarian. She came from a good family as both of her parents worked as successful physicians, and even though they had hoped that their daughter would follow in their footsteps, Rachel’s love of animals was what determined her career path.
Rachel studied at the University of Melbourne and the thought of having a boyfriend who would take time away from her studies never even crossed her mind. This is precisely why it was such a surprise when she went out with a group of friends one night during college and found someone who changed everything.
That night, Rachel experienced what she thought was love at first sight. His name was Taylor and he was 22 years old and just wrapping things up at school with an engineering degree.
That summer, the pair began a courtship that quickly turned into a full-blown committed relationship. At the beginning of her sophomore year, Rachel moved in with Taylor because she couldn’t bear to be away from him.
About six months into living together, Taylor came home one night with what appeared to be a bruised face and broken arm. He told Rachel that he had been mugged and without hesitating, she jumped at the chance to help him and handed over $2,000 to pay his supposed hospital bills.

After several months of helping Taylor pay his bills, Rachel came home one day to find that Taylor had vanished from their apartment and the life they had made together. Rachel was completely devastated when she called Taylor’s mother who told her that he had been killed by someone he owed money to.
