School Custodian’s Home Burns Down And Community Surprises Her With New One

Brenda Hurst is Spartanburg, SC's beloved custodian at Boiling Springs High School.

Many students and staff members consider her family. When disaster struck and Hurst's home burned down, the community came together to take care of their own. And, judging by her reaction, she didn't think this would happen in a million years.

"She changed my life and I'm honored that I was part of changing hers for the better," said recent graduate Alexis Ork.

Ork, the student council and Carpenters for Christ came together to do something incredible.

They blindfolded Hurst, put her in a police car, and drove her to a blue bus. It was when that blue bus drove away that Hurst nearly collapsed.

Her knees buckled and she screamed when she saw what was in front of her: they had rebuilt her a new house.

This reminds me of the time Ellen surprised this big family with a new car. Their reaction was as priceless as Hurst's.

"The Lord allowed us to have it fully furnished. You've got a red sofa and a black table and chairs," Mike Ravan, with Carpenters for Christ, told Hurst.

"It's a blessing. It's an honor. I always say, 'I'm overwhelmed.' I still say, 'God is good.' No matter what you go through, keep your faith and trust in Him and He'll work it out for you," said Hurst.

She even got a walk-in closet, a feature typically reserved for the rich and famous.

"(I) feel like I'm in Beverly Hills," Hurst shouted.
