If you saw this, what would you do?
Steve St. Bernard, a New York City bus driver, was walking home from work when he saw something shocking outside of a Coney Island housing complex.
It was a 7-year-old girl standing on the air conditioner outside of her window. The air conditioner was not steady. It moved and shook with the girl standing on top of it.
To St. Bernard, it was clear that any second she was going to come crashing down. Onlookers watched apprehensively, and the footage of the terrifying moment was recorded on the phone of a bystander.
Sometimes seeing something and saying something isn't enough; sometimes we have to do something. If Alice Bradley hadn't acted when she saw two gunmen headed for a school, who knows what might have happened.
If Steve St. Bernard didn't by chance see a little girl dangling from a window, the consequences could have been dire.
"I just prayed that I'd catch her," St. Bernard recalled. " 'Please let me catch her, please let me catch her.' That's all I could say," he added.
No one knew how the little girl got there; it appeared she crawled out of the air conditioner's accordion-like partition. St. Bernard shouted to the girl to go back inside but she didn't. Later on it was revealed that the girl has autism.
When he realized she wasn't going to crawl back inside and that the air conditioner was unsafe, St. Bernard waited for the worst.
What happens next is chilling. Footage shows the girl fall off the unit dozens of feet toward the ground.
Now watch what St. Bernard does…
