You're about to enter a home where imagination runs wild and creativity abounds.
Cabana Floripa blows my mind, and I think it will have the same impact on you. This hand-built, beachside cabana is rented out on a nightly basis by people all over the world. Inside, the colorful, vibrant, and whimsical space features a loft with a double bed, air conditioning, TV and internet, a kitchen, and a private bathroom. The most amazing thing about Cabana Floripa is that it was built with demolition materials from other houses in the region. Most of the walls are made of glass bottles, creating a feeling of being outdoors. It's amazing how materials that were once considered garbage were used to create something so uniquely gorgeous. The kitchen is my favorite room in the house — it looks like something out of a children's book!
The home is located on one of the most beautiful beaches of Florianópolis in the southern region of Brazil. The Praia Brava beach has crystal clear waters, fine sand, and strong waves.
The builder/creator of the house is an Uruguayan artist named Jaime who has lived on the island for 30 years. In 1995, the hill on the beach's access road caught his attention. He decided to settle there to create art and found the terrain offered him new and exciting artistic challenges. So, Jaime began to build new homes using material otherwise considered garbage, including glass, demolition wood, pottery remains, and used bottles. All of his houses are designed with the same ecological awareness. He says the secret is to go back to the origins and reuse everything, from the siding to the light chimneys. We've seen the magic that can be done inside an old, vintage Airstream that easily could have been thrown away — and Cabana Floripa is no exception to the rule that, with some creativity and ingenuity, anything is possible.
