Food hacks might just be our favorite kind of life hacks. There are so many cool tricks to making the foods we use every day in easy, inexpensive ways that it's always fun to see something unexpected in the kitchen.
Take this video, for example. Have you ever looked for canned caramel in the supermarket? It's not always the easiest thing to find, but caramel is so yummy on so many different things, there has to be a better (and easier) way to track down this delicious treat, right?
Well, popular YouTuber Todd's Kitchen has a really clever, simple way to make your very own caramel in a can!
In the video, you can follow along as Todd takes one small can of sweetened condensed milk, rips off the label, and drops it into a deep pot of water. Making sure that the can is fully submerged under the water, he brings water to a simmer and leaves it alone for three hours.
After simmering for three hours, Todd carefully removes the can from the pot and let's it cool overnight. He says you should let it cool for at least six to eight hours, but overnight is a safe bet.
Once it has cooled, all you have to do is peel open the can and you can see that the sweetened condensed milk has magically transformed into creamy, delicious caramel! Yum!
Not only is this a lifesaver for those of us who can't seem to find canned caramel in the store, but it's also a cheap alternative to the store-bought variety. A can of sweetened condensed milk is very inexpensive, and you can boil three or four cans at one time if need be.
Talk about a delicious, money-conscious life hack. I know what I'm going to be doing tonight!
