The country music world lost a legend this year when Grand Ole Opry star Little Jimmy Dickens passed away on January 2, 2015.
At 94 years old, Dickens was the oldest and longest performing member of the Grand Old Opry, so you can only imagine what a loss this is for country music lovers. To celebrate his long life of achievement, a memorial event was held at the Opry one week after his passing — not to mourn, but to celebrate the long, beautiful life that Dickens spent doing what he loved.
Many country stars can say Dickens had a great affect on their lives, but when it came down to who would perform in his honor, there were two who knew him best and stood out from the crowd. Current country queen Carrie Underwood took the stage and shared her fondest memory of Dickens, how the old man would always greet her with a kiss on the hand; and Superstar Vince Gill, who was also close with Dickens and spoke fondly about the guitar he played with: a gift from Dickens' and his band.
Together, the duo performed a moving version of Gill's hit song "Go Rest High On That Mountain." When you see this touching, emotional performance, it becomes clear that Dickens is smiling down on these two from Heaven.
