Kids and kitties… does it get any cuter? The Animal Rescue League of Berks County, PA created the “Book Buddies” program for children in grades 1-8 to come to their shelter and read to lonely cats. The unique program benefits both the young students, who get to practice their reading and public speaking skills, and also the often-neglected cats, who receive love and tenderness from the young children. According to the ARLBC, Book Buddies got its start when a staffer encouraged her son to practice reading while hanging around the shelter.
Teachers and parents love the program, which is open to students of all reading levels, and it becomes a fun socializing activity as well.
The cats may not understand the stories, but the children’s soothing voices help to socialize the cats and prepare them for adoption.
Since news of Book Buddies first arrived on Reddit, the ARLBC has heard from shelters in New York, L.A., and Chicago looking to start similar programs.
