Grieving Server Goes To Work, Then Customer Writes A Note On The Bill About Her Grandma’s Death

Heather Schelsteder was working a slow shift on New Year's Eve at a Cheddar's restaurant in Baytown, Texas.

One of Heather's customers was sitting at a table with two young boys. Heather started up a conversation with the woman and learned more than she expected to.

The woman was a criminal psychologist whose brother, a soldier, was killed overseas while fighting for our country. The woman was preparing to interview veterans who came back from the war with PTSD, and she was feeling anxious about her upcoming assignment. She feared it would hit a bit too close to home.

Heather then told her customer that she, too, was experiencing a heartbreaking loss. Her beloved grandmother had recently passed away, and she was the first person Heather loves who has died. Dealing with her grandma's death was particularly difficult at the time.

By this point, both Heather and her customer had tears in their eyes. "We just kept talking until the next table came in and she got up and left," she told USA Today.

Heather went to pick up the bill, she discovered this anonymous woman left her a $100 tip left on the $27 meal she ordered — that's a 370 percent tip! Heather was, of course, floored.

But it's the message that was left with the money that made the most difference to Heather: Have an amazing New Year. It gets easier

"She made me realize there are still people out there that do care," Heather said. "Thank you. I didn't get to thank her."
