Chinese Man Mistakes Two Pet Bears For Dogs

Like any dog owner, Wang Kaiyu adored his pets. For two years, the Chinese man living in the Yunnan Province took great care of his beloved animals, which he bought near the Vietnam border in 2013.

He's now discovered a shocking truth: The pets he thought were dogs are actually two Asiatic black bears, according to news reports.

While it might be easy for many to distinguish between a dog and a bear at first glance, Kaiyu was unaware of any difference.

It was only when the bears grew older that he began to realize their behavior was quite different than the average dog. These big mammals not only weighed 100 pounds each, they also had a massive appetite and often killed the owner’s pet chickens.

It was when Kaiyu recently stumbled upon fliers from animal protection advocates with a list of endangered wild animals that he realized his mistake. The Asiatic black bears, which are endangered due to illegal hunting and habitat loss, were listed as a class II protected species. He then called the authorities.

The bears have since been transported to the Yunnan Wild Animal Rescue Centre where a spokesperson said they are doing well. The center is also deciding where to place the black bears.
