Glenn Close Believes Robin Williams Would Still Be Alive If Christopher Reeve Hadn’t Died

Glenn Close, 76, believes that "if Chris [Reeve] were still with us, Robin [Williams] would be too." She first said this in 2017 when speaking at the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation's annual "A Magical Evening" Gala in New York City, reports Entertainment Tonight. She said it again in a new documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.

In the film, which premiered at 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2024, Glenn says, “I always felt that if Chris was still around, Robin would still be alive," People reported.

In 1995, Christopher injured his spine in a horseback riding accident, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. He died in 2004 when he was 52 years old.

Robin died by suicide in 2014 at age 63. His friendship with Christopher was "a life-giving force sustaining them both," Glenn said in 2017.

Christopher and Robin went to New York’s Juilliard School together and were roommates. They then became close friends. In 2017, Glenn explained that she first met Christopher through Robin.

"It was the summer of 1982, when we were filming [The World According to Garp] on Fishers Island," she explained. "On Friday evenings, Chris would literally swoop in, piloting his own plane, scoop Robin up, and away they would fly for the weekend. On Sunday, late afternoon, Chris would swoop back in and deliver Robin back."

"They were on top of the world. They were living the kind of fast and crazy life that our business can hand to you if you become a wildly famous phenomenon, practically overnight," she said in 2017, as per Entertainment Tonight.

Robin continued to be great friends with Christopher after his accident. He was one of the first people to visit Christopher in the hospital, and he did so in a way that was both surprising and humorous, Us Weekly reported.

"When he entered the hospital room for Christopher Reeve, he dressed up as a doctor. He had a thick accent," National Enquirer columnist Rob Shuter said, as per Us Weekly.

He explained that Christopher was surprised by the doctor saying he needed "a proctology exam," but then noticed it was his friend making a joke.

"The two of them had a great laugh, maybe the first laugh since the accident occurred," the columnist said, as per Us Weekly.

The documentary, which is said to be a tear-jerker, includes anecdotes and interviews that provide more details about the strong friendship Christopher Reeve and Robin Williams shared.

"Their friendship, their connection, is the stuff of legend," Glenn said previously.
