Police Officer Dives To Save Boy Who Fell Through Ice

Frozen bodies of water during the winter can be a very dangerous place for anyone. The simple reason is that the ice may appear thick enough to walk on even when it's not.

There have been many instances when people have made the mistake and ended up falling in, as well as animals who were trapped after unknowingly running onto the ice.

A 14-year-old boy in Indiana found himself in such a frightening situation after he chased after a softball onto a semi-frozen pond. The boy immediately fell in the water and was unable to lift himself out.

Thankfully, Lawrence Police Department Officer Dustin Van Treese rushed to the scene. He didn't think twice before taking off some of his gear and running towards the boy to pull him to safety.

"I have a child of my own and immediately, I mean absolutely immediately, I was envisioning my child that was out here in the water and I just came here as fast as I could," he told WXIN.

Department Captain Gary Woodruff hopes this will prevent others from making the same mistake.

“It’s a good reminder for everyone of the dangers of going out into a pond that seems safe, but the ice is pretty thin with the melting ice and it’s just not worth your life,” he said.
