Elizabeth and her good friend Patti were two young law school graduates living in Tennessee. Both women stood out to their classmates and loved ones as two bright and motivated individuals with big hearts who would make compassionate lawyers one day.
It was a cold winter’s day when the pair decided to brave the icy temperatures and meet for lunch. They decided to meet at a nearby diner where they planned to go over some of their notes for school.
The lunch began fairly normally as they shared pancakes and coffee and went over their course notes together. Their meal and study time lasted approximately two hours and just as they were settling up their bill, both women couldn’t help but notice a homeless man sitting across the street.
Elizabeth’s heart immediately went out to the unhoused man as she commented to Patti about how his hands must be ice cold from the below-zero temperatures. At that point, Elizabeth asked her friend if they should buy him a hot cup of coffee and a sandwich, to which Patti quickly agreed.
Before they could step out the diner doors, the pair spotted a police vehicle pull up beside the homeless man. The cop got out of his car and promptly began to talk to the man sitting on the side of the street. The two prospective lawyers suddenly found themselves keeping an extra watchful eye outside.

They didn’t even have to exchange words, but both of the young women figured that the police officer was likely going to write up the unhoused man for begging on the side of the street, but they were totally wrong.
