Vacationers, beware. Credit card fraud is a harsh reality, but did you know scammers are now turning to places like fast food restaurants and gas stations? Using something called a "skimmer," crooks can clone a credit card and steal its personal bank information in a synch.
When hidden inside gas pumps, skimmers collect card information from anyone who fills up their gas tank and pays at the pump. In Ionia, MI, for example, one station alone recently had as many as 20 victims! And i the video below, a hidden camera records a man stealing the info from at least 70 cards while working one shift at a McDonald's drive-thru. Now, police departments, gas station owners, and even former credit card hackers are teaming up across the country to try and put a stop to this frightening trend.
Compromised pumps are typically found closest to the street so it's harder for clerks to see from inside the store. Also, most stations are hit by skimmers during the daytime. Watch the video below to learn how you can avoid this happening to you.
Skimmers not only drain bank accounts, but dealing with the repercussions can be a long, painful process for victims.
