Back in the spring of 2015, a group of friends living in India saw that a group of women just won a Guinness world record for crocheting a blanket of over 11,000 square feet, and they felt that they could easily do better than that.
They came up with a plan, and that's when this small group of women decided to do their best to beat the record! What started as a small community project quickly "went viral," and before they knew it, over 2,000 women from all over the world were beginning to share their crochet blankets to become a part of this amazing project.
Women from all over with all sorts of crocheting experience were part of this program. Some women have been crocheting all their lives, while for others this project was the very first time in their entire lives! The women in charge of the project realized how important social media was, and they sent out the message for everyone to make 40 x 40 inch blankets.
It took a long time to get there, but finally the women thought they had enough blankets to beat the previous record. They went to a large field outside the city and started to sew and crochet the hundreds and hundreds of blankets together.

The "Mother India's Crochet Queens" decided they were going to beat the previous record no matter what! They drove in hundreds of blankets early in the morning before the sun had even risen.

It took months of planning for this amazing moment, but they still weren't sure it was going to get done. They put the crochet blankets into large rolls and started setting up in an attempt to beat the world record.

While usually light as a feather, when combined together, these blankets ended up weighing hundreds and hundreds of pounds.

It took dozens of people all day just to put the blankets together.

Thankfully, it didn't rain that day either, or else these blankets would have been even heavier! The countless women involved in this project spent hours and hours bent over, just to combine one blanket with another. They did this all day in the scorching hot sun!

When all was said and done, they managed to combine hundreds of blankets to form one giant super-blanket that absolutely crushed the previous record.

At 36,500 square feet, this blanket was over three times bigger than the previous record holder!

It was no question that these women deserved to be rewarded for everything that they strived for. Everyone involved got a certificate to prove that they had helped make history.

To make this story even more incredible, when all the women were finished and the reward given, they decided to separate the blankets once again and donate all of them to charities! Now, children and those in need will be able to have a soft and beautiful blanket to sleep under every night.
