Do you remember those Magic Eye books that were so popular years ago? I definitely strained my eyes on more than a few occasions attempting to decipher the images concealed in the strange patterns.
That's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to artists bending our brains with their purposely confusing creations. Those capable of manipulating objects and perspective always baffle me, like the man who turns circles into squares (and vice versa) or a simple cell phone causing the whole internet to scratch their heads trying to find it.
Surrealist Dutch artist Leon Keer has made his whole career out of making audiences question what's right in front of their eyes. Working in spaces ranging from a canvas in his studio to city streets, each design distorts our world with his themes of augmented reality. To be honest, it makes those old books that tormented me as a child look like amateur hour in comparison to the fully immersive work Keer produces.
In the short clip below, you can see his project for the Life Festival in Schaan Liechtenstein in action with the help of a curious observer. At first, it appears that Keer has switched his medium from paint to sculpture and crafted a large, obscure blue cube with a sphere of speakers resting inside. However, as soon as the man takes a step inside, you see the truth hidden in plain sight.
