It's really a shame there aren't more movie musicals these days. I remember falling in love with the song and dance routines of the 1940s and '50s as a kid. Talented performers like Fred Astaire never ceased to astound me. If only I hadn't been born with two clumsy left feet, I would have tried to follow in their fancy footsteps! The charming flicks may seem hokey to audiences now, but I still love all the technicolor choreographed glory.
While others were busy watching the Super Bowl, I took a walk down memory lane with this adorable clip from the 1953 film I Love Melvin. Starring Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor, who also co-starred in the previous year's mega-hit Singin' in the Rain, the duo play a struggling actress and magazine photographer respectively. Though it was the dapper Gene Kelly who stole Reynold's heart in their earlier film, O'Connor is the lucky guy who falls for her this time. Spotting her in Central Park, he attempts to gain her favor by offering her a cover photo on Look magazine, which she's more than happy to oblige and help further her career. Unfortunately, he doesn't really have the power to make that decision and things get a little tricky, as they so often do in these delightful films.
Before they get mixed up in all of that mess, this scene shows off Reynold's exceptional dance skills. She flies through the air as a human football in an elaborate faux-scrimmage with the opposing teams tossing her around the field in her silly outfit.
