4-Year-Old Travels Nearly 2,500 Miles For A 5-Hour Heart Surgery, Still Smiles When It’s Over

Denis, a 4-year-old boy from El Salvador, has never been able to live a normal life.

He hasn't been able to run around and play like other kids. He's been sick his whole life due to being born with a life-threatening heart condition.

After running just a small stretch on the playground, he'd have to stop, crouch down, and basically force blood to circulate to his lungs. However, from here on out, Denis will finally be able to have a normal childhood.

This is all thanks to the lifesaving heart surgery that he received at an Albuquerque hospital. Healing the Children is an organization that brings children in need to the United States to get lifesaving surgeries and treatment that they would not be able to get in their home countries.

Albuquerque doctors say that a child with oxygen levels as low as Denis' would have been hospitalized a very, very long time ago. Seeing the relief on Mom's face and hearing little Denis laugh after the risky five-hour-long surgery is enough to make your heart melt.

Can you imagine what was going through Mom's head all those years that she simply couldn't get her son the help that he so desperately needed?

I'm sure the five hours of surgery was no picnic either. Her shoulders must feel light as air. Thank goodness for charitable organizations like Healing the Children and for the good doctors and surgeons who worked hard to make Denis better. He will finally be able to live the normal boyhood that every little guy deserves!
