‘Love Boat’ Star Dick Van Patten Dead At 86

Hollywood has lost another beloved star. Dick Van Patten, the star of hit shows The Love Boat and Eight Is Enough, has passed away at the age of 86.

He died of complications from diabetes at Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, CA, his representative told the press.

A rep for Van Patten released the following statement to Entertainment Weekly: "I am sorry to report this sad news. His family will not be doing any press at this time."

Born in Kew Gardens, Queens in 1928, Van Patten made his Broadway debut at 7 years old in 1935's Tapestry In Gray before starting his lengthy career in television.

He also made numerous appearances as a guest star on various shows, including Sanford and Son, Happy Days, Family Guy, That '70s Show, and many others.

In addition to acting, Van Patten was also an animal lover. In 1989, he started his own pet food line, Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods.

He is survived by his wife, Pat, whom he married in 1954, and their three sons, actors Nels, James, and Vincent Van Patten. He is also survived by his sister, actress Joyce Van Patten, and half-brother, director-producer Timothy Van Patten.
