DIY Murphy Bed Doubles As The Perfect Room Decor

Open-loft apartments are cool, but they aren't for everybody. Yes, they're typically cheaper, and the limited number of rooms means they're easier to clean, but you really have to get creative with the space.

We found a DIY-er on Imgur who goes by the name of ClyneKP. Although he loved his loft apartment, there were a few issues.

First of all, his new space didn't come with closets or storage areas of any kind. He was also a little uncomfortable with the fact that anyone who just walks into his family room is also immediately looking at his bedroom. It felt a bit too personal.

That's when he decided to get creative and come up with a solution of his own. After looking at a few ideas and designs, he decided to build his own bed, a Murphy bed to be exact.

Since his walls were completely flat, he'd also need to build up some shelving around it. The result is pretty incredible.

Scroll down to find out how this clever DIY-er transformed his space, and let us know what you think of his creation in the comments!

This DIY-er decided his open loft apartment needed an overhaul.

In order to create some storage space and make his bedroom area a little more private, he decided to build his own Murphy bed.

He began by breaking down the measurements and fitting the frame of his bed together with plywood.

He purchased the Murphy bed kit online to help with the first part of the project.

From there, he'd build onto the outline of the bed to create the shelving unit.

The Murphy bed kit he purchased came with all the necessary items for building the bed frame.

It even came with some useful fold-down leg bars that hide away easily.

Next, it was time to fit the shelves to turn this project into one seamless unit.

The DIY-er made sure to secure the unit to both the wall and the Murphy bed itself.

Next, he built the shelves in and up the wall.

Finally, he'd have some space to store his personal items and even have a few spaces to add accents and decorations to the room!

At this point, the Murphy bed was almost done!

After fitting the mattress, it was time to adjust the library rail supports.

When the Murphy bed is in its upright position, a library ladder will slide across the unit to allow this clever DIY-er to access his things on the top shelves.

Instead of painting over the bottom of the Murphy bed and leaving a blank-looking space on the wall, he began to cut out small squares.

To remain consistent, he used 1/8-inch tile spacers.

The result looked pretty cool, but what did he cut out all those squares for? Wait for the surprise at the end…

He painted a base coat of primer and three coats of black paint to his new unit.

As that dried, he got some hardware ready to finish off the project.

Remember those small squares he painstakingly cut out?

He added cheap pieces of hardware to make the Murphy bed look like a set of filing drawers while the bed is flipped up!

The end result looks fantastic.

When the Murphy bed is flipped down, his loft apartment looks like a completely different space!
