Dwyane Wade recalls the devastating moment that he told his now-wife Gabrielle Union that he had fathered a child with another woman while the two were on a break, which almost led to the end of their relationship.
During an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, the 41-year-old NBA Hall of Fame star remembered telling Gabrielle, 50, about this crushing moment. In that moment, Dwyane thought that ending the relationship would be the best move for both of them, especially in order to save Gabrielle from any more hurt.
“I tried to pussyfoot around it, I tried to break up with her,” Dwyane explained. “‘Hey, things have been bad lately,’ ‘Hey, we’ve been having a little distance in our relationship anyway,’ I tried all of that. She kept showing up.”
“You’re thinking about it all, it’s all scary,” he continued. “One, the whole situation is scary enough, you're a public figure. But you know that this is going to hurt someone that you’ve been building a relationship with and a life with.”

“No matter what people say on the outside, or what people want to think, ultimately you gotta sit with you, and you gotta sit with this person, and I had to sit with my wife and have this conversation.” The two eventually decided to move forward with their relationship, despite the difficulties, and got married in 2014. They welcomed their daughter Kaavia James Union-Wade via surrogate in 2018.
