I Tried Kombucha Face Masks For My Exhausted Skin All Month And Here’s What Happened

I have been a big fan of drinking kombucha for years. If you're unfamiliar, kombucha is essentially mushroom tea. It's a fermented drink that is delightful to some and downright menacing to others, and my favorited brand in the whole world is absolutely Townshend's, which makes its closure all the more painful.

When I got asked to try out the kombucha face masks by Earth Kiss, I was intrigued: You can do more with kombucha than drink it? And it will be good for you? OK. I dove in, eager to see what magic the universe had in store for me.

First of all, here's what Earth Kiss has to say about its kombucha masks:

"Whether your skin needs detoxifying, purifying, hydrating, exfoliating or toning, our Earth Kiss Super Naturals skin-friendly, Kombucha-based range of nutrient-rich clays and biodegradable bamboo sheet masks cover all the bases you could want in your pursuit to recapture and maintain smoother, softer, fresher looking skin."

Sounds good, right?

The first mask I tried was the kombucha and shiitake purifying sheet mask, which claims it will "protect the elasticity of your skin while rejuvenating a tired looking complexion." I'm pretty sure just about any parent would describe their complexion as tired, so it seemed like a good fit.

I am always into the experience of wearing a sheet mask, which I think everyone should try once a week. I spent the 15 or so minutes watching Housewives with my son, washed the excess, and voilà: I genuinely felt a little rejuvenated. I always think it's difficult to know if something really works after only one use, but it was nice to just take a little bit of time to veg.

A week later, I tried the kombucha and spirulina hydrating face mask. Its goal is to "work in harmony to minimise the appearance of pores, tone your complexion, and hydrate thirsty skin." It's winter in the States, and everyone's skin usually takes a beating this time of the year — hydration definitely seemed like a good idea.

This mask was actually pretty effective right away, and I genuinely felt like my skin was softer after I washed away the excess. I definitely recommend keeping this mask, or one like it, in your arsenal in the drier months no matter where you live.

I've now been using one of these masks each week to pretty great results. While I think any skin elasticity improvement will become more evident over time, my skin has definitely felt softer, cleaner, and overall healthier since beginning this experiment. In short, kombucha for the skin? Sounds good to me.
