Ellie Goulding’s Giant Dress Turns Into A Stunning Light Show

In 2014, pop singer Ellie Goulding was invited to sing a couple of her hit ballads on stage at The Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium. Audience members included Queen Elizabeth, Prince William, and the Duchess of Cambridge. Goulding wanted to spare no expense in impressing the highly prestigious crowd, so she decided to wear something that would make a splash… and boy, did she.

Goulding made headlines in her jaw-dropping 600-foot-long gown that acted as a canvas. The dress was illuminated by a stunning light show, all the while suspending Goulding in the air as she belted out an unforgettable performance. Singing "How Long Will I Love You" and "Explosions," Goulding's dress featured a lace embellished corset top with a seemingly endless white train. It took three people to construct the gown; five days to complete; and four puppeteers hidden underneath the material making it move, as the light show projected various colors and beautiful patterns on it.

London-based designer Carl Robertshaw designed the dress and video artist Frieder Weiss colored it using an interactive video system.
