Expired Baby Formula Is Becoming All Too Common

Amanda Hopkins was unable to breastfeed her son, Bricen, when he was born. The new mom turned to formula to help get her baby boy the nutrients he needed to grow happy and healthy. While most doctors advise breastfeeding as the best option for infants, not all moms can provide breast milk to their babies. Thus, formula is a pivotal staple for many newborns.

However, Amanda has noticed something that became all too common. She'll go to the store to pick up the formula, but when she returns home, she'll notice that it is expired on the label.

"I wouldn't feed my son expired milk. And formula is milk,” Amanda told News Channel 7. “The nutrients break down. And even though it's processed and pasteurized, and in a can, it still loses nutrients. So that's important. That's all the nutrients he can get."

The nutrients in the baby formula are key to a healthy development, and if they start to deplete as they expire, that means infants aren't getting what they need. News Channel 7 went to several different retailers and were surprised to find that many of them were selling expired formula. Amanda is well aware of how expensive those cans are and believes that financially struggling mothers will use expired formula if it looks fine because they don't really have a choice. Amanda urges parents to check the label before they leave the store.
