When you play classical music all of the time, sometimes you just want to let loose, throw structure out the window and dance — even if you have a humongous cello strapped around your neck!
In a burst of spontaneity, renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and fellow cellists of the Chicago Symphony took an ordinary dress rehearsal and made it extraordinary! A video captured these talented folks smiling, laughing, and waltzing with The Block Strap in the lobby of Symphony Center. (The Block Strap is the first custom-designed strap for standing with the cello.)
The waltz is such an impressive dance, it has intrigued us during Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough’s performance on Dancing with the Stars and newlyweds who performed a “silly waltz” on Hoverboards!
Yo-Yo Ma’s enthusiasm is infectious — no wonder why he has captured the world with not only his talent, but charisma as well. He’s especially adorable as a “waltzing cellist” because his face really lights up while encouraging his fellow cellists to just let go and have fun.
“I always enjoy watching him enjoy life! He is blessed with loving what he does… And he does it extremely well!” commented Gig Schaeffer on Facebook.
I have been lucky enough to marvel at Yo-Yo Ma in action when he’s performed in NYC. While he’s one of the best soloists in the world, he doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight with others and loves to accompany orchestras.
Please SHARE this fun, loving story with cellists who need to let their hair down, fans of Yo-Yo Ma, as well as fans of the waltz!
